Jersey City firefighters avoided a possibly deadly explosion while putting out a fire in a Chinese restaurant near Journal Square yesterday, officials said.
"If the owners would have opened the door it would have blown them across the street and could even have taken the structure down," Battalion Chief Andrew Johnson said of the three-story building.
When firefighters responded to the fire, at Kennedy Boulevard and Sip Avenue, at 6:31 a.m., they found the restaurant's rolldown door concealed a fire that had smoldered overnight, Johnson said.
