Jersey City firefighters avoided a possibly deadly explosion while putting out a fire in a Chinese restaurant near Journal Square yesterday, officials said.
"If the owners would have opened the door it would have blown them across the street and could even have taken the structure down," Battalion Chief Andrew Johnson said of the three-story building.
When firefighters responded to the fire, at Kennedy Boulevard and Sip Avenue, at 6:31 a.m., they found the restaurant's rolldown door concealed a fire that had smoldered overnight, Johnson said.
The fire had consumed the oxygen in the first-floor restaurant and left it full of superheated gases, creating a "backdraft," Johnson said.
Fire Capt. Wayne Taylor quickly realized that if the building's door was opened the fire would suck in fresh oxygen and the gases would detonate, Johnson said.
Taylor ordered firefighters to cut a ventilation hole in the rear of the building at the level of the restaurant ceiling to allow gases to escape, said Johnson. The vent and door were opened almost simultaneously and a fireball blew out the vent hole, Johnson said.
It then took firefighters about a half hour to get the fire under control, and the Chinese restaurant suffered heavy damage, Johnson said.
Sgt. Jack Redmond and P.O. George Bushka apprehended a shoplifter yesterday in the plaza. The alleged shoplifter was in possession of clothing that was the property of 10 Spot a clothing store located at 2849 Kennedy Blvd. Thanks to an alert Mike Craig and Tyrone Railey from our Maintenance and Ambassador crews respectively, they contacted Chris Bernardo, Operations Manager, who in turn contacted Sgt. Jack Redmond, the Police Supervisor. John Fotos, Regional Manager (Pictured left standing against the scaffolding) for the 10 Spot retail chain, indicated to Chris Bernardo that he was impressed with the quick response on the part of the S.I.D Personnel and the Police.
